In January of last year, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they were stepping down from their royal family duties due to a multitude of reasons with more than a few concerning their mental health.

But let’s start this story from the beginning, shall we?

Meghan Markle was an American actress best known for her role in Suits and Prince Harry was, well, a prince. They had a whirlwind romance which included excursions to Botswana and dinner dates around the world. They tied the knot in late 2018 and have been happily married since.

Since the very beginning, Prince Harry was quick to defend Meghan whenever he felt she wasn't being treated with the utmost respect. That is why it didn’t surprise many when Harry and Meghan announced that they wished to step down from Royal duties. He felt the UK press was ‘destroying’ his mental health by their constant hunger for articles about Meghan. They had had enough. From their interview with Oprah, we also know that they faced heavy criticism from the Royal Family themselves about things like the suspected race of their son, and Markle commenting on her contemplation of sucide as she felt trapped by the family’s behaviour.

In late February, after the 12 month processing period finished, Buckingham Palace announced that Meghan and Harry are no longer royals and have been stripped of their military appointments and names. The news seems to be coming out at trying times for the family as Prince Philip is still hospitalised for his medical conditions. There seems to be no bad blood between either side and Harry said he regularly ‘zooms’ his grandparents in England while he lives his no longer royal life.

So what is next for Harry and Meghan?

They have since moved to sunny Los Angeles where they will be raising their children and enjoying life as civilians. Harry has expressed that he enjoyed his new circumstances when he embarked on his first double-decker tour bus experience with James Cordon where they found out that tea and a moving bus did not make the best match. They finally have the freedom to do what they please and they choose to spend their afternoons looking after Archie and ordering takeout while watching Netflix. Unfortunately, they have not got the chance to explore LA yet due to Covid restrictions. How weird to think of how they now live just like the rest of the world.
