Love Triangle Drama between Sabrina Carpenter, Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo Explained
We're breaking down the supposed feud between Olivia Rodrigo, High School Musical co-star, Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter.
After releasing her debut single at 17, "Driver's License," the Bizaardvark alum made headlines in January 2021. The hit song resonated with Rodrigo's fans, as well as Taylor Swift, but it also led some to believe it was about the alleged tension between her, Bassett, 20, and Carpenter, 21. Eagle-eyed fans pointed out that Rodrigo changed the lyrics from "brunette" to "blonde" from her 2020 teaser track. “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about’’, Olivia sings, referring to Carpenter’s hair colour and the fact that she’s three years older than her.
Sabrina seems to have also released a song called ‘Skin’ which also refers to Olivia Rodrigo but Sabrina has stressed that Skin is not just about one person but it is a conglomerate of experiences she has had this year. There seems to be no bad blood between the two girls as Carpenter says ‘we are all just telling our truth and trying to feel okay within our own situations’. Throughout the song, Carpenter wishes she could have been friends with the person she was singing about but as for now she is just content with being able to tell her side of the story.
Rodrigo's track came six months after the album "Anyone Else" which was released by Bassett, which seemed to be about Olivia Rodrigo. “How am I supposed to think about anything else? / How am I to go on keeping this to myself? / I am done pretending I want anyone else / Anyone else, anyone else,” Bassett sings. He later clarified that the track was written about falling for a friend who was unavailable.
Rodrigo sings in her song, "I just can't imagine how you could be so ok now that I'm gone / Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me.'' They never confirmed they were a couple, but Disney fans believed that after Olivia alluded to a "failed relationship" on TikTok, rumouring they split in the summer. He was seen at lunch with Sabrina several months later, and the two also attended a Halloween bash as Lavagirl and Sharkboy. It's either a drama that we'll never know the whole story of or, since Josh just dropped another song,' Only a Matter of Time,' it's a perfectly timed marketing strategy that we can't help but applaud.
