Shopping ethically can be done by making sure that the products you purchase do not involve the exploitation of people, animals or the environment. These products can be fair trade, organic or cruelty free. Those that make the products should work in stable conditions and earn a fair salary. Nowadays, it may seem hard to find ethical brands to shop from, so here are some tips to shop ethically:
Research
Although it may take some time, researching the best places to shop will be worth it. Make sure that the business you want to purchase from has met ethical standards and your personal moral standards.
Shop practically
A lot of the time, we tend to shop for things we don’t need. Whilst shopping fast fashion is inevitable in some cases, and completely cutting out fast fashion consumption isn’t practical, there are other practical measures you can take. For example, preventing over consumption can ensure that you are not mass purchasing products that harm the environment and its workers.
Go thrifting
The act of thrifting has recently grown within the last year or two. Thrifting is said to be environmentally ethical as it goes against fast-fashion. As these clothes aren’t thrown away, this decreases the amount of clothing sent to landfills
Shop locally
In the last year, many startup businesses in Bahrain have started promoting their products on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Supporting your local businesses not only allows them to thrive economically, but can be seen as ethical as these startup businesses (that typically have an owner or few workers), are not exploited in their work.
